October 2009 NEWS from THREE SISTERS

September was a successful month – our KNIGHT was spectacular, RENAISSANCE Day was fun, and
DEWEY was great. We’re looking forward to our new website and HLR Programs in October!

HLR Programs
Registration is open for Middle Eastern Marketplace. Experience life in a different culture without leaving Iowa. Presented by Kristie Burns on Oct. 9. Held in partnership with the West Des Moines HSAP. Grades 1 – 4 at 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.; grades 5 and up from 12:30 – 2 p.m. Hour and half sessions, $3/student. Limit of 35 students. We have room for 15 more students in each session as of Oct. 1. Registration now open until noon on Oct. 6.

Registration is also open for Recycle Me!, scheduled for Oct. 26. Designed for grades K - 2 (older siblings welcome), free admission. Kids have a hands-on activity and practice making decisions about items used in their everyday lives. 10:15 a.m. 30 minute program in Pleasant Hill. Cap of 35 kids.

Calendar
As a way to encourage the home school community, we’re looking to publicize all non-exclusive home school events. Event submissions that are not members-only such as open support group meetings, field trips, and speaking engagements are welcomed at calendar@homelearningresources.com. Approved events may be included in our monthly newsletter. We keep a calendar of these events in the sidebar of the blog as well as on the Calendar page on our website.

Sept. 29 – Oct. 7 Borders Educator Appreciation Week, West Des Moines

October 8 – Campfire Informational Meeting. 10:30am at the Altoona Library. Campfire is for both boys and girls ages 2 years-12th Grade. This will be a homeschool group. The Program Director for Campfire and the group’s leaders will be at the meeting. Craft provided for the children. Club meetings will be Thursdays from 10:30am-12pm, twice a month at the Altoona Library. The first meeting on Thursday, October 22nd. Contact info: Nicole Seay -- Niklynne@gmail.com

Oct. 10 – 18 Barnes and Noble Fall Educator Appreciation Week, Jordan Creek Town Center. Educator Reception on Oct. 11; Home School Reception Oct. 18

Oct. 26 – Recycle Me!, Pleasant Hill

Looking ahead:

Nov. 20 – Bread Around The World. Just in time for you to add to a Thanksgiving conversation, this program will discuss flat bread in Mexico, the United States, and India; include the topics of corn and yeast as ingredients, and have a hands-on portion. Presented by Barb Vaske through World of Difference in West Des Moines. Two sessions, 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., 45 minutes each. Grades K - 8. Younger siblings will need to be off-site. Admission $5. Limit of 18 kids/session. Held in partnership with WDM HSAP. WDM HSAP families please register with Tami Prescott. Registration opens approximately Oct. 20. Information at Three Sisters website.

Dec. 11 – Nutcracker Ballet, (the school edition is edited down to one hour). Produced by Iowa Dance Theatre at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines. $3/person. Contact Kathy at dandkpolson@msn.com

Conference News
The theme for 2010 will be “Homeschool Success,” on April 17, 2010 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in West Des Moines. Suggestions for topics and volunteer speakers are also being accepted at see3sis@yahoo.com

THREE SISTERS is a small Iowa company founded by three bargain-loving home school moms. It has produced homeschool sales and a conference. It remains open to producing other events, including HLR Programs. The founders revel in the fact that sisterhood does not rely on bloodlines.
